I was recently trawling Digg.com (As you do) and i just noticed a post about Geocities.com disappearing and leaving a lot of valuable users out in the cold in regards of free hosting. I for one think this is sad, many of you would tell them they could easily get free cPanel hosting or something a little more technically advanced. Sadly for some, nothing beats the status quo that geocities provides. I have to admit i started out with a nice geocities site (which, has you would expect was neglected many moons ago and no longer exists)

I for one think this is sad.

But my main use for Facebook is to find people that i used to know, such as people i went to primary school with. I honestly don’t know what it is but i find it kinda nice to find out what people are doing Eight years after i saw them (hell i even found my first girlfriend, friendship pending)

So if you ever went to Templestowe Heights Primary School and a crazy cat called “Alex W Hughes” happens to add you, just know its me searching for some of those people that are lost but not forgotten.

As i type this blog im sitting infront of a lighting desk which has a screen that is so big that i doesn’t belong with a lighting desk, it belongs on my desk.

I may have mentioned that my current desk consists of a laptop riser for my Macbook Pro, some logitech speakers, a G15 Keyboard, a hard drive for time machine backups and of course, my humble second monitor. Currently this monitor is a old Dell 15″ LCD that serves the purpose of a console monitor for my linux server that i access via SSH. As the screen is so small i tend not to use it for much other than iTunes windows and email. But if i had a large monitor i might use it more. It has also been proven that large monitors lead to better workflow.

I desperately want a large monitor. But browsing and interacting with this website your helping me pay server fees and win my way towards a larger monitor.

Many of you have loved reading about how to get your Logitech G15 Keyboard to talk to your mac and display your data (if you have read it, you can find it here http://alexwhughes.com/2009/01/logitech-g15-keyboard-on-mac/)

Sadly with the introduction of Snow Leopard i’ve begun to have issues getting it to work effectively with the system preferences panel. The issue occurs when i try and open the the LCD Manager panel and i get a prompt that many of you Snow Leopard Users would now be rather familiar with.

For those who are unsure here is a the exact prompt i get for LCD Manager and a few of my other applications

And upon reloading the menu a few things take place.

The first is the application opens (then crashes) and then opens again and seems a little slower than expected under SL. The reason for this is simple….to technical sorts like me. Basically with the new update your favourite mac operating system has became a 64bit OS instead a 32bit one. This kind of change makes things faster but its less compatible than 32bit, mainly because up until devs have only ever had to deal with developing in 32 and haven’t even dreamed about 64. i can pretty well assure you that when the Developer version of Snow Leopard was pushed a lot of high profile persons wet themselves when they realised that compatibility with this new aspect was going to be a bitch.

Recently Made the Transition from Windows to Mac and feeling a bit lost regarding application choice?

Well Hopefully this post will help you,

The first big difference from a windows user and a mac user is their stress level, the reason for this Mac has a hell of a lot of open source or freeware software available to things that you may had to pay to do with your windows computer.

The First Application I recommend is Adium.

Adium is a free and open source instant messaging application for Mac OS X, written using Mac OS X’s Cocoa API, released under the GNU GPL and developed by the Adium team.
This fantastic application allows you to chat to your MSN, GTalk and even facebook chat contacts on your macintosh. it is also higly customisable down to the dock icon (mine looks like its a adobe product)

Download

9/10 Penguins (it lacks audio/video chatting)

The Second is Sentui (iTunes Backwards)

Easy to use, Stylish, Award-Winning App
Works like iTunes, but it’s Everything in Reverse
Basically it allows you to plug in an iPhone or iPod and Copy songs or movies off the device and automatically add them to your iTunes. You can also rip entire playlists and even your entire library.

Download(trial)

8/10 Penguins (i don’t like paying for applications, but is an amazing application)

Can someone please explain to me why anyone would offer their iPhone applications for free on the iPhone app store, because from the research I’ve done it’s a total fuckup to do so. Why?

I’ll tell you why, it’s a simple case of the dev’s wallet.

If I make my application and put it on the app store or just test on my device I need the following:

*Mac computer (2000$ at least)
*iPhone (800$)
*iPhone Dev account (99$ a year)
*a book teaching you Xcode and Cocoa touch

If you added that up with my 32gb iPhone and Macbook Pro your looking at an outlay of 3500$

And after paying that I expected to be able to dev and at least test on
My device.

So I created my first app using sample code called SysSound which just plays back a sound when you press a button and tested in the iPhone simulator and found it worked like a charm. I then wanted to put it on my device, and that’s where the trouble started as apparently I need to pay apple another 99usd a year for the privalige of running my own Apps on my iPhone.

Which brings me back to offering apps for Free, now you could put adverts in them, and most do. Wish at first annoyed me as I assumed that they did that so they could profit from the app. Not so as it seems they do it to cover costs.

So any chance of seeing my helpful application on the store that has been storyboarded have just become a lot slimmer. Thanks Apple, you ever wonder how many applications that would be instant hits get abandoned when they can’t pay the subscription cost?

Obviously when you first buy a device such as an iPhone you download every single free application until you struggle to find the messages app when you need to txt someone and delete it. But i’ve had this phone long enough to know what applications should be kept and which ones just sit on your home page.

My Favorite but least opened application is Boxcar which just sends me a push notification whenever i receive a @reply on twitter.

Im admit to being a bit of a social blogger/photowhore so i find the Pixelpipe application an excellent addition to my main homescreen.

Another fantastic application that works well when your away from your desktop or laptop is Prowl which sends a push notification whenever you receive a growl message on your computer, until i crashed growl i never realized how much i rely on this small application to deliver quick bursts of infomation.

And now onto the difficult question of Twitter, On my desktop i swear i’ve tried every program i could and i finally settled on tweetdeck with a custom list of people i actually know. I was very happy to see that tweetdeck for the iphone was free and available and i was even more thrilled when i noticed that you could sync the columns from the desktop application to your iphone. I have to admit i use tweetdeck for most of my tweeting but i removed the all friends feed so it only loads my “friends” “DM’s” and “Replies.” if i decide i want to read some random tweets i open my adsupported version of twitterific (which i also have if i want to quickly reply to things that boxcar has brought up)

I also love the idea of IM 3.0 but it very annoying if i forget to sign out and get woken early in the morning by someone asking why im up on MSN.

I shall follow this post up with a podcast entry that lists these applications and some more. stay tuned!

Last Night i went a bit mad and decided to actually stay up and watch or listen to WWDC live. I tried to get some sleep before the event (which started at 3am Melbourne Time) but i just couldn’t contain my iPhone Enthusiasm. So after two instant coffee’s and some good ol’ vintage scrubs i was ready to be part of the Apple WWDC Experience.

My main thrill was due to all the rumors buzzing around about the prospect of a new iPhone with better Camera and iChat Capacity (sadly we haven’t got a front facing camera or a bonjour chat client such as iChat Mobile)

Despite this i was overwhelmed to see that so many of our prayers have been answered with the 3.0 update and the new hardware that looks like the splitting image of the normal 3g model (which is good for those who bought a 3G standard during the crazy cheap clearance *cough* one of the Hughes Family Members )

Before i go any further in this post i have to put an image of the new beast in this post as it just looks amazing with the fresh new Apple Applications

Amazing Looking Isn’t it?

Anyway, this new amazing palm sized computer is the latest revolution to be brought out by the currently Jobless Apple Computer Inc

Most of the new features announced are just part of the 3.0 update. But some hardware only features such as the Magnetic Compass, Voice commands and of course that wonderful 3.2mp camera point to a gradual step forward beyond the wonderful product that is the iPhone. As a whole i think the market will and should view this new GS model as just an upgrade and not a new revision (despite apparently boasting a completely different inside architecture)

Despite this, on the 26th of June (Australia Release Date) i will be lining up to get hold of this new piece of joy, and finally ditch my rather reliable 3.2mp camera clad Nokia 6500. Today i registered for updates from my preferred service provider so if they do what they did with the 3G and allow you to preorder i can do that.

One of the features that seems to be glossed over that will be big press when people start to get their hands on the device is the new headset which boasts a “centre switch” which by my imagination means it will have more than just once button since if a device has only one button you wouldn’t call that button the “centre button”

Only Time will tell.

Belive it or not im actually updating my blog. After about two months of social media silence im back, and im bringing back an article relating to my current activity.

Right now my office consists of a macbook pro and a 3g phone for a modem and i can proudly tell you that the view out my window is constantly changing thanks to the fact im currently on a bus heading home. Now the data connection i have isn’t the best and i am currently running a speedtest to find out what i can do while traveling at this speed. As i wait for the results of that i shall share with you what i have recently discovered.

*No matter how well you are dressed, having a laptop on a bus makes you look like more of an arse than being one of those people who talk loudly on their phone thinking everyone cares about their pointless lives…..there is a time and place for that and its called twitter.

*having a macbook pro on your lap on a bus and typing on it is a still within itself and anyone who manages to do it with such a large laptop should be rewarded with mur.

*No matter how much you enjoy your own music whatever the bus has playing is always better. (gold 104 mostly)

Ontop of that, trying to browse the internet and using an IM client is near pointless at this internet speed.

In case your wondering here are the results

http://www.speedtest.net/result/489671066.png

Or

Ping: 378
DL: 0.5mbps (bs)
UL:0.11mbps

and i suppose i can’t finish this crowningly boring post off without adding an image

Recently a lot of people have been asking me how they can improve their twitter follower count and become more of a community player in the twitter scene. Sadly the there is no perfect answer as some guides i’ve read make you believe, But there are some simple steps you can take to curve and prevent follower loss.

Firstly let me tell you that twitter followers are a fickle bunch, there are some people out there who just want a high follower count and they may try to follow you and the moment you follow they back they unfollow you. As bad as that is there are steps to combat that and i will cover them a bit later in this guide.

What Not to Do With Twitter (Or, if you want to keep followers never do this)

Twitter has earnt the reputation of having a userbase that “tweets” about everything from waking up to well…bowel movements. Always try to remember that people do care what your doing but you really need to make sure its interesting.

An example of a good tweet would be:

Just ordered my iMac It should be arriving before the 23rd

Which engages your audience and normally leads to responces asking about the specs.

An example of a bad tweet would be:

Leaving Taco Bell Now….i’ll tweet again when im in the carpark

No one cares about that fact you went from taco bell to the carpark, except your mother….and she’s not going to be reading your tweets.

Apart from tweeting too much (which is the biggest mistake you can make) the other mistake people seem to make is follower whoring, which basically breaks down to seeking out every single person on twitter you can find to try and raise your twitter follower account. which is fine if you take an interest in what they say, but if you unfollow them the moment they follow you its just bad karma.

Which brings me onto one of my favorite sites for dealing with rogue unfollowers…

There is a site out there called Twitter Karma, and i advise everyone to use its “show only followers” and “bulk unfollow” features. So Basically here is what i do every month..in dot points (so its easy to follow)

Login to Twitter Karma

Click show “only following” (which will display people that your only following, that aren’t following you back)

Go through the list ticking the boxes of people who don’t follow you back (i follow people like arjbarker and adam savage and don’t expect to get followed back so don’t just unfollow everyone who isn’t following you)

click the “bulk unfollow” button

Sit back and feel a little less worried.

Another service i use is called “auto follow” which strikes fear into a lot of people as they feel it is an impersonal way to manage your followers but i feel its ok as long as you police it.

Since so many people hate services like this i won’t list any recommended services, but if your interested google is your friend. But i am happy to offer a do’s and don’t on autofollow services

NEVER setup an an automatic direct message to every new follower, if anything is going to kill off your follower count that is…i get about 15 of those stupid things everyday and i hate them with a passion (and i know im not alone)

You don’t have to welcome every single new follower you get, the best way of telling someone how happy you are is interacting with them on their tweets (which i will cover shortly)

About every month after i’ve run the bulk unfollow service i select “people who only follow me” and i make sure that i follow all of those people who the system may have missed so how.

if you follow those steps and remember that no matter what you do, your always going to have more people that your following than are following you your going to be fine

My final point well help you gain followers

Engage and know your audience

There are a few simple steps that help you do this

DO seek out people with a similar interest (if you like dj’ing and stuff…seek out people who like that..twitter search is your friend)

The Best way to get followers is to ask people and interact, taking the dj example again you might ask (ahhahah pioneer gear is shithouse, i’ve got some fantastic american dj stuff….which is a poor example as i know its the other way around)

From that previous point the @ is your friend… ask questions about gear even just laugh along with some of the strange stuff that you see on twitter

The real simple key to twitter is tweeting interesting stuff and knowing how to engage an audience, apart from that you really need to work out your own niche and work to it.

Also take note of your follower stats to see whats working Twittercounter is the best application i’ve found for that.

Thank you for reading all that, and remember @hughesie or leave me a comment on this post

Today i was having a conversation with someone regarding website design and attracting customers. Which made me take stock and realize that the internet and advertising is changing at such a rate that an advertising style a few years ago that was perfect wouldn’t work today at all. I think the largest change has been in the personalization of the internet that has been called web 2.0, which i’ve focused on seriously in a previous article. But to recap, the main idea behind it is that the company or individual converses on a personal level back to the visitor, sometimes in real time allowing a better sense of the client base to be realized. For example i believe a keystone of an internet advertising campaign is no longer just getting a high search ranking in google but having accounts and links spread across twitter, myspace and facebook enabling the user to interact in this web 2.0 way. For some companies this style of approach is still bleeding edge and it all depends on your demographic. For example a DJ or lighting and sound company caters to younger generations that are always attached to some piece of technology, for a company like that a few targeted ads on facebook and a twitter feed telling their “followers” about gigs there currently working on should be a corner stone of their web deployment advertising.

On the other end of the spectrum accounting companies would be looking to gain the edge still in the printed media form and maintain a static html website that simply provides there viewers with a place to find contact addresses and telephone numbers. The reason for this is simple, older generations stick to what they are comfortable and they are used to picking up a phone, organizing a meeting and heading in for a face to face meeting to discuss business. The current 90′s generation wants everything to be instant, they want to be able to gain infomation and act on within minutes, i know of some of my peers who have poor face to face communication skills but the moment they get in front of a computer they can talk faster than i think! The times are a changing.

If you use the internet as socially as i do then you will know that people stick to what their comfortable. The best example is the constant war between users of myspace and facebook in which some people refuse to change or manage two accounts as their sick of having to use two upload programs to share their latest pictures of friends completely spent at a random party.

Unlike others i have managed to accept a lot of services that allow me to trade infomation with other peers, despite that i still have the issue of showing everyone all my images and data. This is where pixelpipe comes in

Pixelpipe allows you to send your files to them and they will distribute them to all the locations you need them, which for me includes flickr, facebook, myspace, twitpic and picasa for photos and youtube for videos.
For example when im out working on productions instead of just sending all my images to twitpic for my followers to see i can instead send it to pixelpipe which will then send it to all the sites i define in a matter of minutes. If i want i can even tag the images or add a bit of a description explaining what im taking a picture of.

No matter if your a picture pro or just a photowhore, you can save time by using pixelpipe to send your images where they need to go

Today I discovered the greatest thing known to mac converts, alright maybe vmware might top this but for g15 keyboard owners its right up there. Today whist roaming Logitech forums I discovered that they were beta testing an app that allows full support for your Logitech g15 keyboard screen plus the GKeys. Upon installing this fantastic app (which places a small icon in your taskbar) the old Logitech logo that all mac g15 users will be used to disappears and is replaced by an old friend. The g15 clock which I have to admit on the mac platform is a site for tired mac gamer sore eyes. The package that it installs with comes with the usual amount of widgets we all expect (clock, performance monitor, countdown and scripting interface menu) and I am yet to test windows plugins. I think the greatest point here is that finally mac users have stood up and said, we are sick of being stuck with mac only hardware, we won’t to feel the power and attract the users who want to use their g15 like god intended. Ladies and Gentlemen, Logitech G15 on mac OSX has landed.

You Can download it here, don’t be fooled when it tells you its only for the g13 I can assure you it works on at least the g15 orange and I’ve heard stories that it works with the g11 and original g15.

Edit: I’ve been using it for less than 12 hours and twice the program controlling it has crashed leaving the screen displaying a song with the timecode going nowhere, slighty annoying but its better than the annoying g15 logo .
