Finding People On Facebook
Sep 12th
I have to admit that im a bit of a Facebook addict sometimes (mainly because its on my phone and i have a lot of real friends not just randoms on it)
But my main use for Facebook is to find people that i used to know, such as people i went to primary school with. I honestly don’t know what it is but i find it kinda nice to find out what people are doing Eight years after i saw them (hell i even found my first girlfriend, friendship pending)
So if you ever went to Templestowe Heights Primary School and a crazy cat called “Alex W Hughes” happens to add you, just know its me searching for some of those people that are lost but not forgotten.
Dreaming of Large LCD’s
Sep 10th
As i type this blog im sitting infront of a lighting desk which has a screen that is so big that i doesn’t belong with a lighting desk, it belongs on my desk.
I may have mentioned that my current desk consists of a laptop riser for my Macbook Pro, some logitech speakers, a G15 Keyboard, a hard drive for time machine backups and of course, my humble second monitor. Currently this monitor is a old Dell 15″ LCD that serves the purpose of a console monitor for my linux server that i access via SSH. As the screen is so small i tend not to use it for much other than iTunes windows and email. But if i had a large monitor i might use it more. It has also been proven that large monitors lead to better workflow.
I desperately want a large monitor. But browsing and interacting with this website your helping me pay server fees and win my way towards a larger monitor.
Logitech G15 Keyboard On Mac Part 2
Sep 8th
Many of you have loved reading about how to get your Logitech G15 Keyboard to talk to your mac and display your data (if you have read it, you can find it here http://alexwhughes.com/2009/01/logitech-g15-keyboard-on-mac/)
Sadly with the introduction of Snow Leopard i’ve begun to have issues getting it to work effectively with the system preferences panel. The issue occurs when i try and open the the LCD Manager panel and i get a prompt that many of you Snow Leopard Users would now be rather familiar with.
For those who are unsure here is a the exact prompt i get for LCD Manager and a few of my other applications

And upon reloading the menu a few things take place.
The first is the application opens (then crashes) and then opens again and seems a little slower than expected under SL. The reason for this is simple….to technical sorts like me. Basically with the new update your favourite mac operating system has became a 64bit OS instead a 32bit one. This kind of change makes things faster but its less compatible than 32bit, mainly because up until devs have only ever had to deal with developing in 32 and haven’t even dreamed about 64. i can pretty well assure you that when the Developer version of Snow Leopard was pushed a lot of high profile persons wet themselves when they realised that compatibility with this new aspect was going to be a bitch.
Sit back and enjoy the ride, its going to be a long one for a lot of applications
Bloggers Block
Sep 8th
For some reason i just can’t bring myself to blog or podcast of lately, the reason for not podcasting is simple. In order for me to create a podcast i actually have to sit down and work out what tracks im going to use and then what im going to say in the transitions.
As for blogging for some reason i just can’t find anything to blog about these days, you see since i’ve put subtle ads on the site i’ve felt more of a compulsion to blog and add stuff that would amuse more than me.
I Have two ideas im playing around with lets see how i go.
Advertising Appears on Alex W Hughes.com
Sep 4th
You might have noticed in the last day or two that advertising has started appearing on this website. Due to the current budget constrains i have decided to try to earn some of the money i have put into this website back via some advertising that shouldn’t intrude on your viewing of the site.
I will never put popup advertising on this site
Linked In Hosting
Aug 30th
Today is a sad day for me, as today i made the choice that close the hosting company i started four years ago due to lack of income. Linked In Hosting started out life with principle in mind, give anyone free reliable cPanel for free with limited space then allow them to signup to higher accounts to offset cPanel reseller costs. Sadly despite constant injections from my personal funds i have decided to formally close the company and move on to my personal web projects.
Starbucks
Jul 26th
Had my first starbucks experience today and I can’t say I enjoyed it. I ordered a venti latte which is about 500mls of “coffee” I say coffee in “‘s as it tasted awful compared to say Hudsons or Gosh coffee. But I have worked out a way to fix the problem. A simple maths equation known as 6 to 1. So if you want nice coffee add 6 sugars to one venti sizes coffee!
Hope I’ve been helpful
iPhone Applications That Changed The Way I Work and Play
Jul 25th
Obviously when you first buy a device such as an iPhone you download every single free application until you struggle to find the messages app when you need to txt someone and delete it. But i’ve had this phone long enough to know what applications should be kept and which ones just sit on your home page.
My Favorite but least opened application is Boxcar which just sends me a push notification whenever i receive a @reply on twitter.
Im admit to being a bit of a social blogger/photowhore so i find the Pixelpipe application an excellent addition to my main homescreen.
Another fantastic application that works well when your away from your desktop or laptop is Prowl which sends a push notification whenever you receive a growl message on your computer, until i crashed growl i never realized how much i rely on this small application to deliver quick bursts of infomation.
And now onto the difficult question of Twitter, On my desktop i swear i’ve tried every program i could and i finally settled on tweetdeck with a custom list of people i actually know. I was very happy to see that tweetdeck for the iphone was free and available and i was even more thrilled when i noticed that you could sync the columns from the desktop application to your iphone. I have to admit i use tweetdeck for most of my tweeting but i removed the all friends feed so it only loads my “friends” “DM’s” and “Replies.” if i decide i want to read some random tweets i open my adsupported version of twitterific (which i also have if i want to quickly reply to things that boxcar has brought up)
I also love the idea of IM 3.0 but it very annoying if i forget to sign out and get woken early in the morning by someone asking why im up on MSN.
I shall follow this post up with a podcast entry that lists these applications and some more. stay tuned!

iPhone 3G S Humor
Jun 26th
I recently posted this on facebook when a friend asks how an iphone could rape your wallet
i want the 32gb version and that will set me back over a grand. Plus applications such as Luminr which costs 150$ (i think) and a RTA App (ooooh 50$) plus access fees for checking my facebook and email and internet then there is MSN.
Shall i order a iphone or just burn my bank account on peanuts…at least i could eat for a while with the second option
Best of the voice command jokes
“iphone, rape my wallet”
“sudo make me a sandwich”
following that command so you don’t have to get up
“sudo get sandwich”
“Make me a cup of tea.”
Stay Tuned for some more.
